That’s another award show in the record books! Today I’m gonna talk about the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards and my overall thoughts about the event. This was the 35th annual award show aired from the Radio City Music Hall in New York City and the show definitely had its special moments. From the good and bad moments, this show had some stand out performances and deserving award presentations.
The show opened with Cardi B introducing Shawn Mendes, who then goes on to perform “In My Blood”. I’m not a huge Shawn Mendes fan, but his performance was pretty good. I was impressed with it 100%.
The first award of the night to be presented was the Best Hip Hop Award. Presented by Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish, Nicki Minaj took home the award for her song, “Chun-Li”. Not a bad choice honestly. In my opinion, the award should’ve gone to The Carters for their song, “Apeshit”, but Nicki Minaj wasn’t a bad choice for the award as well. This follows up with a short performance by a new artist, Bazzi. Bazzi looks like he has some potential and I hope to see more of him down the road sometime.
Best Pop Award is up next and is presented by Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively. The nominees for this award were pretty good and it was hard for me to choose a winner myself. Ariana Grande takes the award for her song “No Tears Left to Cry” and I must say she deserves it because that song will go down as one of my favorite songs of 2018.
Logic, along with Ryan Tedder, takes the stage with an impactful performance. They performed the song “One Day” and the whole performance was great. Logic sure knows how to deliver when it comes to performances with a message and credit to Ryan Tedder as well because they both put on a great performance.
Panic! at the Disco performed next with their song “High Hopes”. I honestly didn’t care much about the performance. Nothing against Panic! because I’m a fan of them, but the performance wasn’t that great to me.
The legendary Backstreet Boys introduced the Song of the Year Award and Post Malone takes the award for his song, “Rockstar”. That song has grown on me a lot so I’d say he rightfully deserves this award, along with 21 Savage. This also follows up with a short performance by Jessie Reyez. She’s really beautiful and talented! Can’t wait to hear more of her music.
Nicki Minaj is up next with her own standout performance. She mostly performed some of her tops his from her new album Queen including “Ganja Burns” and “Barbie Dreams”. She also performed her part of her collaboration song with 6ix9ine, “FEFE”.
Best Latin Award is next and is presented by Liam Payne and Shanina Shaik. J Balvin and Willy William wins the award for their song, “Mi Gente”. I’ve never heard the song but hey congratulations to those guys. Hayley Kiyoko does a short performance and it was alright from what I saw. Nothing too special.
The recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award Jennifer Lopez was up next with a big performance. Now if I can be honest for a minute, even though she was the right choice for the Vanguard Award this year, I was not impressed with her performance. I don’t know what it was, either it was the dancing or what, but her performance wasn’t that special to me. Shawn Mendes then appears to present her with the Vanguard Award and she delivered a good speech. Her performance on the other hand, I wasn’t impressed.
Now from a bad performance to a good one, Ariana Grande was next to perform and she did great! She performed one of her hits “God Is a Woman”. Ariana can sing her ass off! The way she hit her high notes in this song was outstanding! She has so much talent and one day she will definitely hold that Video Vanguard Award in her hands.
Keegan-Michael Key and Olivia Munn presents the award for Artist of the Year. Camilla Cabello takes home the award and she deserves it. I think Ariana Grande should’ve gotten that award in my opinion but no disrespect to Camilla. She’s very talented and deserves this award just as much. Followed up was a short performance by a band named PrettyMuch and I wasn’t that impressed with them.
Millie Bobby Brown presented the Best New Artist award and Cardi B takes home the award. I’m not a big fan of hers, but she has had some breakout hits this year so I can see why she won this award.
DJ Khaled introduces Travis Scott and James Blake as they perform some of Travis’ new songs. I really liked “Sicko Mode” that song could end up being Travis Scott’s big hits. The overall performance was fine I have no criticism for this one.
Best Collaboration Award was presented by Gucci Mane and was taken by Jennifer Lopez, DJ Khaled, and Cardi B for their song, “Dinero”. Now again, I would’ve gave this award to The Carters for their song, “Apeshit”. They just delivered so much impact with that song and I felt that they should’ve received any of these awards for that song. Juice Wrld does a short performance and he did alright.
Video with a Message Award is up next and is presented by Amandla Stenberg, Algee Smith, and Sabrina Carpenter. Childish Gambino takes the award for the music video to his song, “This is America”. All I can say about that video is that if you haven’t seen it, you MUST check it out!
Rita Ora and Bebe Rexha introduces Maluma as he delivers a good performance. I really enjoy Latin music and Maluma is very underrated.
Next was the legendary Madonna as she pays tribute to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin and presents the big award of the night, the Video of the Year Award. Camilla Cabello takes home the award for his music video to her song, “Havana”. That video was great and she was the right recipient for this award. By winning this award, Camilla Cabello proved that she is on the rise to becoming one of the best musicians of her generation. Followed up was a sponsored short performance from Lauv.
Lastly, another legendary figure in the music industry Lenny Kravitz was next as he introduces Post Malone, who gives the final performance of the night. This was the best performance of the night to me! Post Malone first performs “Rockstar”, then suddenly transforms into a collaboration with one of the most legendary rock bands in history, Aerosmith! They together performed “Toys in the Attic” and the band’s all time classic hit “Dream On”. Post Malone really delivered the performance of the night and that’s something he will carry on with him for the rest of his life.
I overall thought the 2018 MTV VMAs was a good show. Not one of the best shows they’ve ever done, but wasn’t a bad show at all. Each year MTV always tries to put on a better award show than the previous year, so I hope we get a better show next year! Congratulations to all of the award recipients!
